Work instructions with quality check points.

The use of simple computer based work instructions,with mandated detailed quality check points,that detail pass or fail criteria for the specific step.This would seem to be a must have "type of document" in all manufacturing facilities today!And that this document, would be available in or accessible within all the departments.Which are related or directly associated with the product manufacturing pathway used by the facility for the article under manufacture.

This lack of detailed instructions and or process controls often results in additional down time do to recurring issues which should have been corrected systematically over the products previous manufacturing cycles.

I recently witnessed a batch of primer under going its final steps in the mixing and dispensing process.I observed what appeared to be a shortage of product containers based on my quick calculation of the number of necessary containers verses what was located at the filling station.I was shocked to learn, that no other containers for this material were available within the factory or from the material control group. which utilizes a manually written simple record system of in and out without the benefit of any min/max requirements for new order generation.Which should be based in part, on a historical known purchase cycle time for the needed article.

Over the years, I have visited many workshops within Egypt, along with some decent size factories that apply paints by conventional spray methods.Quite often the spray operations are being performed in an open area or just at curbside. With little regard being giving to the effects of the material being sprayed on the environment or for the spray technicians personnel health.

All to often the technicians knowledge base is or was constructed utilizing outdated concepts and ideals.Which were accumulated over the years working within the particular industry sector. Very little of this information historically was documented in any repeatable medium.That the workers could access, recall or use at a later time, in the context of specific work instructions or process control sheets. Which also should detail the necessary reference materials or other related regulations under the laws of Egypt. which are required for use and should be applied under current ISO standards.

I have found it very difficult, to effectively change the manufacturing culture in Egypt within some firms.As many firms only want to make very minimal changes to the established systems which are currently in use.

One company which I recently performed a manufacturing consultation for. Knew that his company operated at a decent profit level on a monthly basis. That his staffing level was just under one hundred employee's.And that the accountants could and would sort out the other details when they were needed through out the year."Nothing" was accessible or being tracked on a current data base!For any of the established norms and metrics which are routinely used for tracking and planning future business needs on an automatic basis.

This specific firm has been in continuous operations for almost forty years.This firm plans to build a new facility within two years and will implement many new controls within its manufacturing facilities.

Egypt, US seek boosting trade exchange

US Assistant Secretary of Commerce Suresh Kumar underlined the importance of promoting US-Egyptian trade relations.

During his participation in a meeting in Washington with members of the Arab American Chamber of Commerce, Kumar said trade relations binding Egypt and the US should further develop.

According to Kumar, Egypt ranks 34th on the list of US trade partners which does not commensurate with US-Egyptian relations.

The US official said Egypt has great opportunities that would enable it to merge into world trade, especially following reform measures introduced by the government.

Egypt has great potentials that could help the country secure a better rank among countries enjoying high volume of trade with the US, he added.

Today within Egypt the building trend continues along at a very rapid pace. Billions of dollars are going into new projects. One of the recent examples is qouted below.

Spray painting in Egypt

Most Spraypainting equipment sold and used within Egypt ,outside of the larger manufacturing companys is very low quality.With a fast failure rate when used with un-regulated compressors as if often the case here.Along with the simple fact, most lack inline water and oil filters period. Few have any ideal or understanding of the full benefits of Hvlp spraying operations and fear the equipment cost.It has become my mission to show the consumer the truth about painting within Egypt.I have meet with a few of the largest paint manufactures within egypt. Much of the work is done by hand the old fashion way. Brush and roller,I have meet a few very skilled craftsman within egypt that know the trade well. It's no longer a surprise to me to see paint failures on most anything thats been painted or repainted.Rusted air condictioner supports, sheets of paint and filler falling from buildings, peeling paint,cracks , ect. Even the building sector, one needs only to drive to any one of the new citys. Which are many then begin to look for the salts leaching through the coatings. Which was caused by a failure to wire brush and flush the cement surface with clean water prior to application of a sealer coat. Followed by a coat of good sealer available from Sipes paints. Which i often use as its really a decent quality and covers well. I have watched many painters in operation here in Egypt.Then spoke with my fair share of them, about the complete lack of surface cleaning and prep work on interior surfaces.Prior to the application of a suitable sealer.Which should be done prior to the use of a good quality putty or fillers. The normal reply was often you don't need to do that its a waste of money. The simple truth of the matter is, He was either just lazy or has no basic understanding of a paint system. It's just faster for the person performing the paint job.He can get his money and go quicker. This practice will lead to paint failure at the bond line.Also expect to the use more of the costly surface filler.As its harder to close the pores on a un-sealed surface. Correct cleaning, is the fist step toward a long term lasting paint job.That will help protect the investment you made in your building.

Military Painting Brought me to Egypt

My work, over many years allowed me the honor of becoming a expert,In a specific related area of manufacturing for the defense industry. Which relates directly to,the Mechanical operation and long term or periodic required maintenance for control of corrosion products on Military ground electronics systems. Along with the Disassembly, inspection, cleaning processes,pre-treatments,coatings and spray painting of the items based upon the specific requirement's under the military specification's for the article and related quality control requirement's.

Within Egypt,I have worked on three major Depot level Overhauls,for programs such as the ANTPS/59 ANTPS/59M34 and the Hawk system.It's worth noting the TPS/59V3 system is only used in three country's America, Egypt and Bahrain as of late 2007.The TPS/59 system lead to the LockHeed Martin development of the 3/D family FPS-117 radar which can be sold on a global basis as a combined use system.

Prior to my move and work in Egypt.I worked for Gichner Shelter Systems which is currently the largest supplier of electronics equipment containers to the us government for military use.
